For the First Time Ever, the World Made More Electricity From Wind and Sun Than Gas

In April 2026, wind and solar produced 531 terawatt-hours of power worldwide — overtaking gas for the first time.

Energy think tank Ember crunched the numbers for April 2026 and found a genuine milestone: wind and solar generated 531 terawatt-hours of electricity that month, about 54 more than gas — the first time the two renewables out-produced gas across the whole world.

It's a single month, but it marks a line crossed. After more than two decades of record-setting growth, clean power isn't the future of the grid anymore so much as its present.
