North Atlantic Right Whales Just Had Their Best Baby Season Since 2009
Twenty-three calves were spotted this season — a hopeful sign for one of the world's most endangered whales.
There are only a few hundred North Atlantic right whales left on Earth, so every calf counts — which is why this calving season brought such welcome news. Researchers counted 23 newborns, the highest number since 2009.
It doesn't erase the threats these whales still face, but a strong baby season is exactly the kind of momentum scientists have been hoping for, and a reminder that recovery is still possible.
